From Founders to Franchisors: Our Story and Scaling Strategy

In 2017, Amber, Nafisa, and Camila were three speech-language pathologists and mothers with one shared belief: that children on the autism spectrum deserve more. More consistency. More collaboration. More care.
We had each worked in schools, hospitals, private practices, and homes. And in every setting, we saw the same painful patterns. Long waitlists. Fragmented services. Burned-out therapists. Overwhelmed families left to piece together care on their own. We knew there had to be a better way.
So, we built it.
What started as a small, speech-only clinic has grown into Essential Speech and ABA Therapy — a values-driven early intervention program serving children ages 18 months to 6 years with speech, occupational, and ABA therapy all under one roof. Today, we’re proud to partner with franchise owners across the country, helping expand access to exceptional, ethical care while preserving the heart that started it all.
This is our story — how we began, why we chose franchising, and how we scale without losing the soul of our mission.
A Personal Mission Rooted in Professional Insight
Essential was never just a business idea. It was born from the real-world experiences of three SLPs who had been on the frontlines. We had worked with families who were told to “wait and see” while precious developmental time slipped away. We had met children who were receiving speech in one location, ABA somewhere else, and occupational therapy in a third — with no collaboration between providers.
The founders knew we could do better.
We envisioned a place where children received comprehensive, full-time care in one location — where therapists communicated daily, shared goals, and celebrated wins as a team. Where parents didn’t have to be the case manager. Where young children could receive intensive support during the most critical window of their development.
That vision became Essential.
Why Franchising (Not Private Equity)
As the clinic’s success grew, so did interest from investors. There were offers to buy, expand rapidly, and turn the model into something much larger — but less personal.
We turned them down.
Because for us, this was never about scaling for the sake of scaling. It was about preserving the quality and integrity of care while expanding access. Franchising gave us a path to grow intentionally — to partner with individuals who shared our values, rather than handing over the reins to firms focused on returns.
By remaining therapist-owned and led, we could ensure that every new location kept the same commitment to empathy, excellence, and ethical care that defined the original clinic.
The Heart of the Model: Collaborative Care That Puts Children First
At the core of our model is one defining principle: collaboration is not optional — it’s essential.
From the moment a child enters one of our clinics, their care team begins working in lockstep. Speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and behavior analysts don’t operate in silos or meet occasionally to “touch base.” They collaborate daily, sharing goals, reviewing progress, and coordinating strategies to support the whole child.
This integrated approach allows us to create truly individualized care plans. A feeding challenge might be addressed with insights from both the OT and SLP. A language delay is supported in both ABA sessions and speech therapy. Transitions, behaviors, and skill-building are tackled as a united team — not by separate providers with separate agendas.
And it’s not just about convenience — it’s about outcomes. When therapy professionals align, progress accelerates. Families aren’t juggling disconnected providers. Children aren’t adapting to conflicting strategies. Instead, they experience cohesive, consistent care where every therapist is on the same page, working toward the same goals.
This level of collaboration is made possible by our in-clinic model, but it’s powered by culture — a deep commitment to humility, open communication, and shared accountability. It’s what allows us to support complex learners with compassion and clarity.
And it’s one of the biggest reasons why families trust us, and why clinicians choose to stay.
Scaling With Intention: Our Strategy for Sustainable Growth
Scaling a healthcare practice, especially one focused on autism care, is about so much more than opening new doors. It’s about building trust, ensuring consistency, and never compromising on quality.
Here’s how we’ve designed our franchise system to do exactly that:
1. Values-Based Franchisee Selection
We don’t sell territories. We award them. Every potential franchisee is thoroughly vetted to ensure alignment with our mission and values. Our partners are often parents, clinicians, educators — people who care deeply about the families they’ll serve.
2. White-Glove Startup Support
Franchisees are supported every step of the way — from choosing the right location to hiring staff, from ordering furniture to setting up clinical systems. Our startup process includes both virtual training and in-person onboarding, ensuring owners are equipped and confident before they open their doors.
3. Clinical Mentorship and Monthly CEUs
Every BCBA within our network receives individual mentorship and monthly continuing education from our Director of Clinical Quality. We support professional growth, provide guidance on best practices, and help navigate the day-to-day challenges of running a high-quality program.
4. Operational Resources at Their Fingertips
We’ve created a robust online portal filled with custom templates, scripts, workflows, and SOPs to help owners and staff stay compliant, efficient, and effective. Whether it’s HR forms or parent communication scripts, they never have to reinvent the wheel.
5. Data-Driven KPI Monitoring
Each month, franchisees review Key Performance Indicators with our leadership team. We look at both clinical and operational metrics to ensure each clinic is thriving — for clients, staff, and owners alike.
What Sets Us Apart
There are many organizations offering ABA services. Some are large, some are fast-growing, some are backed by private equity. We don’t aim to be the biggest — we aim to be the best.
What makes Essential Speech and ABA Therapy different?
We are SLP-founded and led.
We emphasize early intervention and collaborative care.
We require full-time services because it’s what research — and experience — shows works best.
We partner only with individuals who share our belief in integrity, empathy, and excellence.
We invest in people, not just programs.
And perhaps most importantly, we’ve created a space that still feels like family — even as we grow.
For Parents, Providers, and Future Partners
If you’re a parent looking for a team that will truly see your child and support your family — you belong here.
If you’re a clinician seeking a workplace that values collaboration, ethical care, and professional growth — we’d love to work with you.
If you’re a future business owner dreaming of building something that changes lives — our franchise model may be the path for you.
We believe that doing the right thing — for the right reasons — will always be sustainable.
Closing Thoughts: From a Single Clinic to a Shared Mission
From the start, Essential was about answering a need. Not with shortcuts or profit-first strategies, but with thoughtful care, heartfelt service, and a commitment to doing things differently.
And today, as we support new clinic owners around the country, we’re more rooted than ever in our original mission: to provide exceptional, ethical, early intervention care that makes a lasting difference in children’s lives.
Because when therapists lead with integrity — and partner with others who share their vision — there’s no limit to the impact they can make.
